February 28, 2011 - Posta Leiva

I have now officially been on the mission for over 6 months which is pretty crazy!

Hello everybody!
Another week down in Paraguay. This week was passed with 5 of the 7 days full of rain. It was nice in that it was quite cool for those days, but it was also very wet. I most certainly gave my missionary mall shoes a run for their money. They seem to have survived and are still hanging in there! It´s really difficult to do missionary work when it´s rainy and awful cause nobody wants to talk to us at all so hopefully the rain is over now. Now that the rain is gone, it´s gone back to being hot. The locals say that it´ll start to cool down some time in march. They also say that drinking milk and eating watermelon at the same time will kill you. So we´ll see how it all goes I suppose.
In other exciting news, our showers don´t work in our house which was pretty sweet. Luckily it was cold and rainy so I didn´t have to shower too much. Yay Paraguay! A dude was supposed to come and fix it today but he didn´t come. So I dunno what we´re gonna do. And we found out today that since our house is technically outside of our proselyting area, we´re going to have to move. So now when we´re out contacting and whatnot we get to search for a new house! And changes are this wednesday. It was a pretty quick change for sure. Also grandparents, your package came today and it was most appreciated. I´ll have to save the hot chocolate for a month or so but then it´ll just be great.(I would now do a smily face using a colon and a D but I am once again using a stupid Portuguese keyboard and I dunno where anything is.)
An area 70 president man came today and had a big meeting with all of the district and zone leaders of the mission and did some crazy stuff. He´s whipping the mission back into shape cause it was sorta falling. So now he´s doing all sorts of fun stuff and hopefuly it is great.
All in all it was just a magical week in Posta Leiva. The time just keeps passing all crazy quick like and it´s crazy. I love you all!

More from 21 February 2011

Hello everyone!

One thing I forgot to mention is that I went on a division with my trainer this past week, cause it just so happens that he is in my district now. But anywho it was really cool to be with him again and to actually be able to speak spanish and help him this time :D He was most pleased with me! We threw down crazy lessons! That is all.

February 21, 2011 - Posta Leiva

Hey there family and friends!

Yet another week has passed by in good ole Posta Leiva. It seems like time is flying by here, which is pretty crazy. The big news of the week is that I will hit my six months on the mission on friday! It´s crazy how I´ve already been gone for so long, because it sure doesn´t feel like it at all. Other big news is that we had a baptism on thursday which was quite lovely. We helped reactivate the ex branch president here and he got to baptize his two boys (8 and 11). It was a neat experience. Then we had cake after! The cake in Paraguay isn´t very good but that´s okay. There was also a pretty beastly rain storm on friday. We were really far from any shelter on a road that never ends so we got thoroughly soaked. The good news is my shoes managed to hold on even though they were in water up to my ankles. Yeah shoes! After the storm there were lots of frogs and they´re pretty fun to kick and whatnot. It doesn´t kill them so don´t you worry!
Inocencio update: we went to his house to find out from his daughter-in-law (or something) that he is in Argentina for an unknown period of time. So that was not very good news. We keep trying every day to find new people that are willing to listen, but so far it´s slow going.
Also, the circus came to Posta Leiva, but I´ve never seen it do anything yet so I´m not really sure what is going on there. It´s been rainy a couple of the nights so I don´t even know if they´ve been open or anything. It´d be interesting I think to see what goes on in a Paraguayan circus. I´ve already seen a carnival and that was pretty sketchy.
Other than that, it was a pretty normal week with lots of heat, rain, and walking. I printed off those pictures finally that you guys sent, so if you ever have any more of the family or anything like that, feel free to send em! I love you all!

Mon Feb 14, 2011 -- Posta Leiva

Oh hey there everyone!
Just another swell week in swell Posta Leiva! It´s been pretty exciting I suppose, and filled with lots of rain which means that it´s cloudy a lot which is quite nice. We had zone conference on thursday which was pretty magical. It was a lot better than the last one cause I could actually understand what people were saying. We did some sweet service this week in the asentimiento. We moved a fence post about 8 inches so the neighbor lady could have 8 inches more of ghetto land. It´s kind of cool how people that live in houses made of trash can argue about less than a foot of weeds! Yeah! And on the way back from the service, we watched a dog get hit by a car. The dog is okay so don´t you worry! The other elders that lived with us had a baptism yesterday which was pretty cool. The new elder got to baptize one of them and you shoulda seen his dunking. Right to the bottom I tell ya! I didn´t think she was coming back up. :O Then after, in South American fashion, they had a sweet party in the church cause it was a birthday! They even had a bouncy house thing. And they had crappy hot chocolate and things called Jet Jet! They are kinda like packing peanuts sprinkled with sand. Mmmm! Yeah! We´re having a baptism this thursday so I´m pretty excited for that one!

In other news, Inocencio said he wanted to "resign his investigatorship". He was scared of baptism so now we´re still working with him, but we´ll see how everything goes. We did find some other cool people this week. One of them is a die-hard catholic lady, but she´s really interested so hopefully all goes well!

Other than that, I think it was pretty quiet down here. Only two more sundays left in this change! Crazy! It´s good to know that there is a rabid fox running around back home. But yeah, happy Valentine´s day everyone! I celebrated by going to a chinese restaurant in Asunción. I didn´t actually eat anything cause I had some crappy food last night that did me something awful. But the food looked good. I love you all! Stay safe and happy and all that jazz!

Pictures from Posta Leiva, Paraguay

Mon Feb 7, 2011 -- Posta Leiva

Hello again family and friends,
Another week has passed in good old Paraguay. It was kind of rainy this week so nothing tooooo exciting happened. We had interviews with Presidente Madariaga this week which was nice. Our house kind of flooded too because of the rain and whatnot. That was kind of fun. One of the drainage pipes on our upstairs patio thing was clogged with stuff so the water wasn´t draining fast enough. But, we solved the problem and it made for magical photos I guess. Also, we did some sweet service this week. We got to cut jungle stuff with machetes which was pretty fun. Elder Macias (new guy) was cutting down a branch from a tree and broke his machete in half. The half that went flying almost hit me but I dodged it like the Matrix! And for Pday today we went into San Lorenzo and I found a sweeeeet backpack. So I bought it :D It´s pretty legit. One day you´ll all see it. A lot of the days were much less hot this week, and that made showering without a heater kind of awful. I really hope I´m not here in Posta Leiva when winter comes. Elder Macias got his first real Pday today because for the past few he´s been running errands with his Zone Leader/trainer, but today his Zone Leader/trainer had to go to Asunción for Jedi Council with Presdidente Madariaga. So Macias got to come with us! He saw his first parrot in Paraguay today and was most pleased. Then the parrot pooped. Woo!
Our cool investigator Inocencio had an emergency and had to go to Asunción instead of church on Sunday :( But he´s really stoked to get baptized he says so that´ll happen in February hopefully. He´s legit. And old. Other than that, the missionary work is going smoothly and whatnot. It´s really annoying being in a country with two national languages cause everyone on the street yells at us in Guarani and I dunno what they´re saying. It´s probably better that way. But yeah, that´s all I have for this week. We´re already halfway done with this change. It´s pretty crazy how fast time flies on the mission. I´m having a good time and it´s pretty sweet to hear that Matt gets to use some of that French he learned in school! I love you all! Be safe and be happy! :D

"out in an asentimiento"

how to avoid skin cancer

warehouse that was burned killing wasps

January 31, 2011 -- Posta Leiva

Oh hey there everyone back home,
Everything is going well in good ole Posta Leiva B. The biggest news that I have this week is that some warehouse right behind our house burned down a little bit. It´s technically still standing and whatnot but the inside is all burnt and charred and it´s pretty sweet. Our dueño (the dude that we pay to live in our house) and his wife decided that they wanted to kill some wasps in there, and in Paraguay the obvious way to kill them is with fire! So yeah, somehow they ended up burning everything inside and it was not good, and in the end they had to cut the power to our house for 2 days. But, we don´t have AC or hot water anyway so it was just dark for a while. :D But yeah, power has since returned and it´s all good. In other great news, Fanta has come out with their new Piña flavor! Yeah! It´s pretty great.
This week was pretty cool on the missionary work side too! We met some old dude named Inocencio this week during one of our contacts and he invited us in and all that good stuff. We mentioned church once and he told us that it would be "very interesting" to go to our church and share the gospel with people. So before we even invited him to come, he told us that he´d like to come with us on Sunday. We thought that was kinda cool, but didn´t think he´d come because he was kinda old and seemed a little confused about what was going on. But.....he came! Good ole Inocencio came just the same! (I hope that doesn´t break copyright laws or something because now I´m on a blog :)  ). So, we´ll go back and visit him some more and I think good things are going to happen. Everyone pray for Inocencio! Also this week, I ate fish for the second time in Paraguay. It wasn´t very good, but I hate fish anyway so maybe that was why it wasn´t good. We had to walk 50 minutes to get to it too which wasn´t fun. It was out in an asentimiento which is kinda like Paraguay´s version of a trailer park, but so much more ghetto. The houses are made out of garbage and tarps and stuff. I have a picture that I´ll send! But yeah, the fish didn´t kill me and it´s all good. I watched a goose mess up a cat there, so it was worth the walk I guess.
Today for P-day we went into Asunción and went to Mercado 4! It is some random market place that actually isn´t that cool, but I´ve been there at least and now I know what it´s like. It´s in the South mission and we had to get permission to go there and stuff, but that was about the only thing that made it cool. I didn´t get pickpocketed or mugged or anything so that´s good!
I think that´s about all of the exciting news that I have for the day, but it´s been a pretty exciting week for sure. Now it´s working time and time for a delicious Piña Fanta! I´m still safe and sound and happy and everything is going swell! I love you all! Stay happy and safe!
